Photo Contest Winner
The Mayor and Council recognized Owen Hyatt for submitting the winning photo chosen in the non- professional photo contest sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department. The contestants were to submit photos from the categories of people enjoying the parks, seasonal photos, and landscape or sport activities. Owen, who is ten years old, submitted his photo of the memorial flags with a silhouette of City Hall in the background.
Recognizing CIBA Vision for their community service
The Mayor and Council recognized CIBA Vision for their many years of community service for park projects at Bunten Road Park. The CIBA Vision at Johns Creek has volunteered numerous service hours for park projects. From the “Great Day of Service” to “Community Partnership Day,” CIBA Vision has completed service projects for more than five years, assisting the department with planting flowers, cleaning the nature trail, staining and painting fencing, benches and tables, and installation of the decorative split rail fence along the park drive. Staff is very appreciative of the efforts, time and talent that CIBA Vision has so generously contributed to the Parks and Recreation Department.
Recognizing Duluth Middle School Academic Team
The Mayor and Council recognized members of the Duluth Middle School Academic Team, who participated in 12 state, national, and international tournaments this school year. The team has done an exceptional job representing DMS, Gwinnett County Public Schools, and the state of Georgia, as they brought home a total of 14 trophies (10 of which were for first place). The DMS Academic Team is the champion academic bowl team for the state of Georgia. Additionally, the team had the distinction of placing second out of 700 public and private school national and international teams in the Knowledge Master Open.
Young Author in Duluth!
The Mayor and Council recognized 14 year old Duluth resident Jonathan
Krohn who has written his first book, “Define Conservatism.” In
February, he addressed the Conservative Political Action Conference and
has gained notoriety for his exceptional ability to express his
political ideals and beliefs . He is home educated through a classical
education program that emphasizes history, political science and
humanities.
State Certification Award for Duluth
Frank Rotondo, Executive Director of the GA Association of Chiefs of Police, presented the Georgia Police Accreditation Coalition (GPAC) State Certification Award for Duluth. This award signifies that the Police Department meets the highest standards for professionalism and procedures set by the State of Georgia.
Mayor and Council recognized Girl Scout Troop 142
The Mayor and Council recognized Girl Scout Troop 142: Cadettes Mary Cerny, Chrissi Chandler and Baylee Wilcox. Along with the support of troop members Ariel Boxall, Denise Shepherd and Quinn Hill and their leader Nan Wilcox, the girls painted the Calaboose (the original City jail built in 1908) as a project sponsored by Downtown Development Authority (DDA) Design Committee Chairman Rob Ponder. This project will hopefully earn them the Girl Scout Silver award, the second highest award given by the Girl Scouts.
Appreciation of Service
The Mayor and Council presented certificates of appreciation to Ray Walker for his service on the Ethics Board, to Brad Hench for his service on the Planning Commission, and to Mark Gary for his service on the Downtown Development Authority. Thank you for your time and valuable input over the years.
Lady Wildcat Chantelle Curinton
The Mayor and Council recognized Chantelle Curinton for her outstanding athletic accomplishments. Deemed the first female football player in Duluth, Chantelle played Wildcat football from 1999 until 2002, scoring touchdowns and participating on championship teams. Now a 16 year-old Duluth High School Student, her success has transferred to the softball field, where she is considered one of the top 6 players in Gwinnett County.
Presentation of Game Ball - Sentinels of Freedom
Representing the Gwinnett Sentinels of Freedom, George Rhode presented the Mayor and Council with the “game ball” from January’s fundraiser tournament. It will be placed in the trophy case at Bunten Road Park.

Mayor Harris shows our appreciation to Bill McCargo, representing Cisco, for their continued support of our downtown movies and concerts.
