Chattahoochee Access Will Soon Be Easier in Duluth
Friday, February 15th, 2013
Duluth, Georgia (February 15, 2013) – On Monday, February 11, 2013, despite the rainy conditions, City staff and representatives from Reeves Construction officially broke ground for the construction of the canoe launch at Rogers Bridge Park. The canoe launch is expected to be completed by May of 2013.
HDR Engineering Firm designed the master plan. The concrete launch includes a walk-down canoe ramp, a step-down boardwalk, a viewing area, and natural plantings. It replaces a dirt ramp. Reeves Construction was awarded the contract to construct the launch and was represented by Superintendent Phillip Thomas and Project Manager Brian Trotter at the groundbreaking.
The canoe launch project is a successful intergovernmental collaboration between the U.S. Department of Interior, State Department of the National Park Service, and the City of Duluth. Completion of the canoe launch will provide a safer access to the Chattahoochee River for tubers, canoes, or a surreal place to sit, relax, and enjoy the river view.
The launch construction is being paid for with Park SPLOST funds. For more information about the canoe launch please contact Kathy Marelle at kmarelle@duluthga.net or 678-417-9269.

Duluth’s Gateway Public Art Project Generously Funded by AGCO
Wednesday, September 5th, 2012
Duluth, Georgia (September 5, 2012) – The City of Duluth, led by the Gateway Art Project Committee (GAPC) and Mayor Nancy Harris, seek to commission an artist to design and implement a piece of art to grace the center of the new roundabout located at the intersections of West Lawrenceville Street, McClure Bridge Road and Irvindale Road (There is a fourth roadway that will also connect in the near future). The GAPC was formed in January 2012 at the direction of Nancy Harris to plan and implement the process of choosing a piece, or pieces, of public art to be installed in the center of the roundabout. This initial site-specific project is the first of many public art pieces the City hopes to purchase to enhance the beauty and culture of downtown Duluth and surrounding areas. This location is considered to be a “gateway” into downtown Duluth, in a residential setting, and is expected to become a significant icon in our City and an important symbol to welcome citizens and visitors alike into the most historic area of Duluth.
The gracious donation for this initial project will come from AGCO Corporation (www.agcocorp.com), a leading global manufacturer of agricultural equipment and Fortune 500 company whose corporate headquarters is located in Duluth. AGCO offers a full line of tractors, combines, hay & forage, sprayers, tillage equipment, grain storage and protein production systems which are distributed through 2,600 independent dealers and distributors in more than 140 countries worldwide. “It is important to AGCO to be good citizens in the communities where we and our customers operate. We are proud to support the city that has been our home for almost 20 years,” said Martin Richenhagen, Chairman, President and CEO of AGCO.
Mayor Harris stated, “the partnership with AGCO and the City of Duluth is an example of an involved business stepping up to support the community. We appreciate the fact that AGCO understands the importance of providing citizens with public art that not only enhances the aesthetic value of Duluth, but becomes a lasting statement that AGCO is a business that supports economic vitality in our community.”
The City of Duluth is forming a steering committee to consider a public arts program to include the formation of a Public Arts Commission, funding options, goals and implementation guidelines. City staff has prepared a draft program for the committee to review. If the Commission is formed it would then initiate and coordinate future public art projects throughout the City. “AGCO is making a lasting impression in the City’s vision to implement a public art program for Duluth citizens. This initial piece, sponsored by AGCO, is setting a high standard for the type of art we plan to add to Duluth. We hope that other corporations will follow suit and help the city expand public art throughout the City limits.”
For more information about this public art project please contact Mayor Nancy Harris at nharris@duluthga.net or 770-497-5340. For more information from AGCO please contact Jamy Wright at jamy.wright@agcocorp.com or 770-232-8246. About the Band:
Smokey’s Farmland Band blends musical influences ranging from bluegrass to gypsy jazz to Cajun, creating a progressive sound they like to call “Goodtime Eclectic Bluegrass”. While they enjoy venturing outside the realm of the traditional, they still respect the roots of bluegrass, and retain the energy and twang of mountain music. A typical set features original tunes, good ol’ pickin numbers, and some unexpected covers too. It all comes together in an exciting genre-bending style that keeps listeners on their toes, and on the dance floor!
Among many accomplishments, SFB has opened for Willie Nelson at a sold out House Of Blues New Orleans, Sam Bush at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta, and recently shared the bill for Del Yeah! with The Del McCoury Band and others. They have also opened for the Emmitt-Nershi Band and The Freight Hoppers, and shared the stage with numerous Atlanta and touring bluegrass bands. The band has traveled to Colorado, DC, NYC, and even St. Croix for performances, winning new fans at stops along the way. Their music is dedicated to the festival experience, camping and dancing in community, out of the way places that retain their beauty, live performance, and people who appreciate getting back to the farm from time to time.
Concert goers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. Outside food and beverage is welcome too!

Operation One Voice and Duluth Police Host First O1V Warrior Challenge Race at Lake Lanier Islands Resort
Monday, August 13th, 2012
Duluth, Georgia (August 13, 2012) – This Saturday morning Lake Lanier Islands Resort will appear to be invade by Special Operations Forces and an assortment of weekend warriors as Operation One Voice hosts the first O1V Special Ops Warrior Challenge 5K 10 Obstacle Race at the Islands Resort. The adventure style event is a first for Lake Lanier Islands and for the Operation One Voice team. The first group to challenge the course will be a platoon of Rangers, dressed in battle uniforms, tee shirts and body armor kit running to honor a fallen comrade.
The next group of runners will be the competitive runners from both public safety and military teams. These teams come from local and Federal law enforcement including the FBI & USSS. The law enforcement teams will run against more Ranger and Marine teams.
The race is open to both teams and individuals with corporate teams starting just fifteen minutes behind those in uniform. Participants are placed in flights of approximately 50 runners.
The race will be no ‘walk in the park’, as police officers and firefighters have designed the course to be as challenging as possible with mud crawls, rope bridge and a couple of 8 foot walls to climb after the participants are good and muddy. As the runners negotiate the course, they will note a number of crosses bearing the names of fallen Special Operations Forces troops. The crosses have become a trade mark of Operation One Voice events as a show of honor to the families.
