Preserving Our Past
Cherokee Indians, early 19th century settlers, cotton plantations, and railroad connections all played major roles in the unfolding drama of Duluth’s rich history and culture.
Following are a few important dates in the Duluth chronicle:
| 1821 | Evan Howell first settles area |
| 1833 | Area christened Howells Cross Roads. |
| 1871 | Railroad comes to town; first post office established. |
| 1872 | Town’s names changes to Duluth, after its sister city Duluth, Minnesota. |
| 1876 | Town receives charter, the fourth oldest chartered city in Gwinnett County. |
| 1906 | City of Duluth officially incorporates. |
| 1922 | Duluth elects Georgia’s first woman mayor, Mrs. Alice Strickland. |
| 1943 | Duluth built the first hospital in Gwinnett County |
Recording Our Present
The Duluth Historical Society promotes awareness and preservation of information and resources concerning the history of Duluth and cooperates with other cultural and educational institutions in encouraging historic appreciation and pride in Duluth’s history, culture, art, and traditions.
Present Activities Include:
- Historical Preservation on the Local, Regional & National Level.
- Building strong relationships within our Community.
- Preserving and Promoting our Heritage, Customs and Traditions.
- Compiling lost History and Artifacts.
- Collecting Photographs of Old Duluth, Families, and Environs.
- Developing Programs of Historic Interest open to the Public.
Reaching for the Future
Planning history related events, recording current Duluth activities, and working with the community to preserve and promote the City’s rich heritage are just some of the ways the Duluth Historical Society is forging the future. We realize that we are making history now, today and for generations to come.
