Public Works - Storm Water Stenciling Program
The City of Duluth is co-applicant with Gwinnett County regarding the NPDES (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System) to clean up Duluth's streams and other water supplies. The Chattahoochee River is a major source of drinking water for Duluth residents. The City of Duluth is supporting Gwinnett County's Storm Water Management Stenciling Program to play our part in informing residents of their duties as Duluth residents.
WHY ARE WE STENCILING?
To educate the public that everything that is put in a storm drain or on the
ground ultimately drains to a stream. Whereas waste water in the County sanitary
sewer system receives treatment before being released into our environment,
storm water flows directly into the nearest stream or river. The Program will
remind citizens that water quality and aquatic life are directly affected by
waste going down storm drains. These items include oil, paint, wash water,
pesticides, yard clippings/debris, and other pollutants washed into the catch
basins.
WHAT ARE WE DOING?
We are recruiting volunteers to stencil storm drains and distribute door
hangers. Groups such as girl/boy scouts, school groups, church groups,
homeowners associations, etc. are encouraged to get involved in protecting our
drinking water.
