Main Street

The Downtown will be valued as the heart of the community and an economic and historic resource where people can live, work and play. The City of Duluth will maintain its strong sense of community through the preservation, revitalization and development of downtown by again becoming a focal point of community activity.

The Main Street Office is a haven for the small business owners where they can find information on small business development, building design and incentive programs, such as the Facade Grant Program. The Main Street Office provides help to existing business while recruiting new business for a balance and variety. The Main Street Office offers a Facade Grant Program that has been approved by the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) to issue grants to private property owners/business owners to improve or enhance the facade of their building.

The Duluth Downtown Development Authority was formed to determine and decide on the purchase of properties in the downtown area and the type of development being sought. The DDA also re review architectural and site plans for proposed development within the designated downtown area. Projects currently privately funded and under construction include a mixed-use development by Dan Woodley Communities consisting of retail, office, lofts and town homes (currently under construction) with underground parking, plazas and greenspace. Another project recently completed is Parkside at Duluth Town Green privately funded by Spohntown Building Corporation. The DDA meets on the third Tuesday of every month at City Hall or at the Duluth Festival Center. These two developments are prime examples of how the City solicited private developers to achieve the Downtown Master Plan set by the City.
