Information for an Alcohol Permit and Requirements
THE LEGAL AGE TO SELL OR SERVE ALCOHOL IS 18 to 21 YEARS OLD.
Permits are excluded for Busboys, cooks, dishwashers, hosts
The applicant must submit an application to the City of Duluth business office and submit a present government ID to accurately complete a background check investigation. A temporary alcohol permit will be issued for 30 days until you take the alcohol training class. You will be given a scheduled time and day to take training class following the application process. The fee for alcohol training is $20.00 dollars and you will receive your permanent permit after taking your scheduled class. If you fail to attend schedule class your temporary will then expire. Working with an expired temporary permit or no permit at all you could be cited for $250.00. We are unable to issue additional Temporary Permits. The training class will need to be taken in order to receive your permanent permit.
Consumption on Premises applicants between 18 and 21 years old can get an alcohol handling permit. Servers may sell and serve alcohol only in areas where food service is primarily activity. Only servers over 21 can mix drinks or work as bartenders or cocktail servers. The licensee shall ensure that the server (18) years of age shall be under direct supervisor of a person who shall be both employed by establishment and direct supervisor over the age of 21 and be on site at all times during which the underage employee is working.
Package Retail has to be 18 or older. The City does not prohibit persons under (18) years of age who are employed in grocery store, supermarkets convenience stores, or drug stores from selling or handling alcohol beverages which are sold for consumption of premises; however, the licensee shall ensure that said person under (18) years of age shall be under direct supervision of a person who shall be both employed by establishment and direct supervisor over the age of 21 and be on site at all times during which the underage employee is working.
Alcohol Permits last Two years for Liquor Package Liquor Stores and One year for everyone else. Make sure you look at your permits expiration date. You will need to renew your permit before it expires in order to avoid a 50% penalty. On time permits are $35.00 expired permits are $52.50.
Your alcohol permit is only for the establishment you have applied for. If you need additional permit for the same establishment but in too different locations there will be additional $10.00. If you begin a different job and location you will need a new permit.
Licensee Holders must be aware that you can be cited and your privilege license may be in jeopardy if employees are found to be working without the required permit or if an employee is caught providing alcohol to a minor. Servers then could lose permit up to a year or permanently revoked.
