Construction & Progress

The Block update

The alley and building demolition around the Block has been completed, and the slab that was below Duluth Travel and Boudreaux’s was recently removed. This week, the contractor has paved a new parking lot that connects the two parking lots together. The parking lot striping has been completed and the wheel stops are being placed today. Security fence has been placed around the partially demolished alley and the vacant building. The surface of the alley is uneven and should not be used by the public. Access to the vacant warehouse building is prohibited; this is an unsafe structure in its current condition. We have asked our on call consultant to provide us with a proposal to create a master plan for the Block; this will be used for all future site improvements and would be brought to the Mayor and City Council for approval. Please check back as we begin with the next phase of construction for updates here.

Roger’s Bridge River Access

Construction of the Roger’s Bridge Canoe Ramp is about to begin, the contractor will be mobilizing the first week of February and will be closing off the area with construction fence. This area will be closed off to the public, please allow the contractor to complete his work without interruptions, this is for the safety of both the public and the construction crew. The proposed completion date is May of 2013.

Please check back as we update this site with construction progress and photos.

W.P. Jones Community Building

The building project is nearing construction competition, within the next week, the light fixtures will be installed, the kitchen will be delivered and the remaining items to be stained and painted will be completed. The interior furnishings have been selected and will be delivered as soon as the City accepts the building from the Contractor. The parking lot will be seal coated and restriped to polish off the look for the brand new building. The proposed final completion date is the second week in October. A grand opening will be planned in the near future, keep checking the website for updates.

Hospital Connector Update

As we proceed with our Capital Improvement Program, having recently completed West Lawrenceville Street, the Roundabout, McClure Bridge Road and the Irvindale Sidewalk Loop, we are ready to restart the project known as the Hospital Connector. This project will build a new roadway from the Roundabout to SR 120 at the rear driveway entrance to Duluth High School, however the construction is not scheduled for a couple of years.

Field soil investigation is scheduled to begin soon in the vicinity of the project limits for the purpose of gathering information necessary to design the Hospital Connector Project. During the course of our engineering studies, it may become necessary for the City’s engineering consultant, Clark Patterson Lee, and geotechnical consultant, Willmer Engineering, Inc., to enter upon the properties in the area. It may be necessary for stakes to be driven into the ground and for clearing of some trees and undergrowth to provide access for an ATV drill rig to perform the necessary soil borings. However, there will be no damage to fruit or nut trees, shrubs, flowers or crops by our personnel during the progress of this work. Please be assured that this work will be done in a professional manner with as little inconvenience to you as possible.
